I got home from me long business trip this morning; said hello to the family then went straight over to Surprise. 

Took off the water pump.... Found that there were indeed two gaskets there.  This quite hard one which I had not removed, and the new one.  The new one was rotated so that only the top bolt hole was aligned.   The lower bolt hole was not between the flanges at all.   Better yet, the are around where the doubled and misaligned gaskets crossed was messy with crank case oil.  

I removed the old gasket then very carefully replaced the pump, this time making sure the gasket was squared away.  

I ran the engine in gear for ten minutes at 1200rpm... The white rag I placed under the thing came back out dry and clean.  Apparently I don't have an oil leak anymore.  Imagine my pleasure, which is deep enough to let me gloss over the fact that this whole emergency was caused by my poor workmanship while changing the waterpump.
