Roger, 

I misunderstood you. When you were referring to the tapered edge you were referencing the plan view of the spreader.  I assumed that you were referencing the crossectional view of the spreader!!  So from my point of view the blunt edge (non-tapered)  of the 1-1/8" cross section faces forward, and from your point of view the tapered edge on the plan view faces forward. All confused please raise your hands.

With my old wood spreaders, it appears the tapered edge slopes aft while the 
vertical edge runs athwart ships; so, putting the tapered edge forward, 
results in the stays about even w/ the back of the mast.  Hope it's FAST. 

Has anyone priced new aluminum (is carbon fiber class legal?)spreaders? 
Sure would be nice to get that extra few pounds off the mast.

I think the tapered edge is supposed to go forward, however, the 
spreaders by design were never supposed to sweep aft. 
I did that on my Boat, Infinity 7+ years ago and found she performed 
much better in big air, but no marked improvement in light air. 
It was pointed out to me that the spreaders were on backward, but we 
were winning so who cared. We got a bigger belly in the main as a result 
and did tighten up the slot some. But it does work against the natural 
run of the shrouds.
