So, I?m at Toronto Pearson now waiting for my delayed flight to Providence.
I spend the weekend doing the Mystic Seaport Wooden Boat Mag festival
(anybody who?s going please come and say hello at the R&W Traditional
Rigging booth), crawl around the whaler Charles W Morgan to talking about
their big refit, then I?ll be home again next Wednesday just in time for
next week?s race.

I would loved to have met you at the Wooden Boat show, but last Sunday I developed some prostate problems that took me to the hospital. I had planned to sail from Aquebogue, Long Island today. The heavy thunder storms might have made it a wet trip should I have gone. The WBS is always fun, if you haven't been before.

Michael,

I am appreciative of your cautions. When I posted earlier today I did not 
mention that I was carrying a canoe in the back of the truck that was 
sticking out 5'6". It was really well tied in and I carried a red flag on 
the end of the canoe. It was safe, but I got caught it bumper-to-bumper 
traffic on the Baltimore beltway, I was watching the woman behind me, who 
was texting for the first 20 minutes, then fussing with something in the 
front and back seat for the next 20 minutes, then, just when I thought she 
would pay attention to her driving, she was under the dash most of the time. 
I was sure she was going to run into the canoe/truck...I was a nervous wreck 
with her behind me.

Tom,

Trailer and cargo width limits are a matter of State regulations, as are 
pulling doubles and triples. Each State is a bit different.

I built a trailer for my Alberg 30 in 2002 and have since land sailed her 
many times in Ohio, Indiana and recently Michigan.  I have never been 
stopped by any law enforcement officer. Several official cars have passed me 
by without much of a look.

I do exercise major caution. I never tow the Alberg over an average speed 45 
mph, have a slow moving vehicle triangle affixed to the rear of the trailer, 
orange caution flags on the rear, an extra tail light affixed to the mast 
which is about four feet off the road level and protrudes some 8 feet beyond 
the trailer and approximately 4 feet beyond the boat at the aft end and put 
on my emergency flashers when my speed is below 40 mph.  I was dismayed when 
I noticed that Michigan had increased the minimum speed limit on Interstates 
to 55 mph.

I really don't like to trailer faster than 45 mph. For all my trips I try to 
select divided highways which are not Interstates and two lane country 
roads. On two lane roads I keep an eye on the back up behind me and pull off 
to let them pass if there are more than 3 or 4 cars behind. The beauty of 
traveling just 45 mph is that it makes for easier passing for cars which are 
behind me.  This is a matter of professional courtesy to other drivers 
sharing the roadways.

I really enjoy the fact that I can relocate my boat at will.  When sea 
sailing I rarely travel more than 9 mph so while land sailing 45 mph is 
really fast. The Alberg is precious to me so on land or at sea I endeavour 
to exercise the same degree of caution.

I have spoken with professional haulers on sev eral occasions about permits 
for the Alberg and trailer. Most have suggested that if the tow vehicle is 
something other that an obvious commercial haulers tractor or truck the 
official guys will leave you be. I use a 2001 Ford 250 Diesel Super Duty 
with larger tyre s which essentially makes the truck a 350, air bag 
suspension, 15,000 lbs capacity tow bar reciever, load equializer and anti 
sway bar.  I am dead serious and very careful each and every time I 
transport the Alberg over land.

Don Campbell a Canadian on this list perhaps has the most serious experience 
hauling his Alberg 30 over land.  I am sure he can add to my comments.

Hello all,

Has anyone on the list ever been checked by the D.O.T while hauling
their A-30 and asked for a permit?

Does the D.O.T. have data which gives them the exact beam  of the boat
or do they actually try to put the tape on it.

As I am sure you all know this boat actually only violates the required
beam for a very small point about mid ship. It would be a bit tricky to
actually get it measured accurately.........maybe a couple of plum bobs
dropped from the mid beam and measure between them.

I realize the boat is actually 8'-9" but the beam on my documentation it
is stated as 8.6 that could be construed as 8'-6" by say myself I guess
maybe.

The permits are not all that expensive but they do create  quite a bit
of hassle.They lock you in to a time frame and a particular route.

Anyway, I was just wondering what others have done.......... or might
would consider doing.

Hello gang.

Well SURPRISE finally had a race last night that was worth writing about.

 Despite a somewhat miserable looking afternoon, by supper time the weather
cleared and lovely cool 12-15kt breeze from the south (!?) filled in and
blew solidly.  About 15 boats roared out to the start... In the ?real boat?
division of B  Fleet ( real boat, as opposed the the 24? Shark One-Design
boats we share a start with) there was us, WIND SCOOP (a CS27 who we used to
clobber but this year is quick and beat us twice so far (quote from my
son... ?WTF, did he read a book or something?!?), a Tanzer 22 (ugly, short,
but quick), MAID MARION (an Aloha 28, well sailed by Robin, a gentle soul
who in his youth flew deHaviland Vampires, a 1st generation jet fighter in
the RAF), the Thurley?s with their all-girl crew in their Pearson 31 and
several more.  The usual rabble mob of Sharks was there, I think that vermin
is up to 6 or 8 boats now.

We got into the quite heavy traffic before the start, galloping back and
forth as the clock ticked down, and placed ourselves behind and just to
windward of MAID MARION, close reaching for the committee boat end of the
line doing over 6kts with seconds to go.   Up ahead was a solid wall of
Sharks, nose to tail and several boats thick all hard on the wind (sailing
across our course) and screaming at each other.  We managed to clamber over
MAID MARION, stifling them with our wind shadow as we passed and allowing me
to dive to leeward into a hole that had appeared in the Shark stampede.  We
hardened up and crossed the line with only one Shark ahead of us and to
windward of the whole fleet.   Our principal foes were all with the
exception of Maid Marion, who was nicely behind us and elbowing their way
through the vermin, all nicely to leeward and somewhat distracted by the
howling scramble the rabble were causing at the start line.

For the rest of the race we sailed clean in clear air with nobody near us...
I was reminded of quotation I heard a skipper I crewed for giving to the
yachting press after a big win... ?how do I win races?  I try to start
first, then work to improve my lead...?  None of the big boys in A Fleet,
who started 5 min behind us, came near catching us.  We were hitting 7kts
under spinnaker on the runs (the sets, gybes and douses were nearly
flawless) and we were never going under 5kts on the beats.  We crossed the
line half a leg ahead of our nearest rival and with only the same single
Shark ahead of us.  Wow.   We crossed the finish just galloping under
spinnaker...tossing in a gybe just to be stylish as we got our horn toot,
and reached under ?chute back to the club with the pole just off the
forestay, rooster tails coming off our quarters, stern tucked way down and a
big foaming bow wave on either side.

This being the end of the first series, there was pizza at the club house
after and while chowing down I was amused to have WINDSCOOP consoling me on
our finish... We were so far ahead of them they?d lost track and thought we
were behind them.  Ha ha ha ha he he he.  What a look on their faces when my
son Peter filled them in.
