I stripped the bottom of Scotch Bonnet last year, which I think was the first time in 25 years. The bulk of it I did with Peel Away that a friend had from when he stripped his bottom 5 years ago. This worked great with very little mess on the ground but I didn't have enough to finish the bottom. When I tried to find more, I used the environmentally friendly type which I think made it worse. I tried several other types of chemical stripper with no luck. I saw a Practical Sailor article that evaluated chemical strippers and recommended a soy based product from Franmar. It worked great!

Hi Everyone,
I was wondering whether anyone has any experience or knowledge of building a new
udder.? The rudder off #231 is going into Blackline Marine in Sidney this week
o see whether it can be straightened however I'd like to compare the job to
uilding another ie level of difficulty, cost etc.??
I can see a few have been built by listers before but I was unable to see what
he outcomes were.? ie did the rudder perform as expected etc.
Michael thanks for your comment.? The rudder blade is bent far enough that I
annot compensate for it by changing the position of the post etc.? though I?
ave tried several times.
Thanks
Mick

I'd like to take the bottom paint right down this year. It's time.

George,
Are you near a marina with a high pressure wash down system? Usually you
can get rid of a lot of bottom paint by high pressure wash down. Scraping
the flaky stuff works, then afterwards I use an orbital sander with 80
grit paper - connected to a 12 - 15 gal shop vac to grind down to near the
gell coat. A shop vac hose is made to fit over the exhaust port of most
orbital sanders and does a very good job of collecting the sanding
residue.
good luck!

I find a flat scraper (such as http://bit.ly/emY8vD), frequently
sharpened with a file, works about the best of anything I've tried.
It's still a LOT of work.
