[Public-List] bilge pump counter

I bought this product for $178
https://www.aqualarm.net/comerus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=144
It was better for me to have 1 monitoring device for a bunch of areas than
separate buzzers for everything. I wanted the bilge counter, bilge pumping
alarms and temperature/water flow alarms. Fairly easy to install to an existing
bilge pump - the monitoring line has to be in the switched side of the line, but
I use a separate switch from the pump anyways, so that was easy.
Not super cheap, but far less costly than any insurance claim.

Thanks Bill, where did you get the bilge pump counter? Was it costly?

I have a bilge pump counter that lets me know how many times the bilge pump
has
cycled, and also an audible alarm if it pumps for longer than 2.5 minutes -
it
really helps me sleep at night knowing I will be woken up before the water
hits
the mattress :-) I check the counter every time I arrive - it pumps a bit
when
it has rained hard, usually once or twice if we have had a week of rain.
Alarm
also goes off if the cooling water on the engine fails or goes above a
certain
temperature. Aqualarm is the company - the quality is marginal, but if you
install in a protected location it is acceptable.
That was installed last summer - this summer I plan on fixing the 3-4
locations
that let in water when it rains.

Mike,
Mike,
Congrats on a good survey. I did my first and only survey when I bought 148
in 2003 and learned, because the insurance companies rely on the survey, it
helps to negotiate w/ the surveyor RE the stupid stuff. For example, he
noted the AC plug for the fridge, which was plugged into an accusable
outlet, must be hard wired. Now I have to do that which will make removing
the fridge a little more difficult. Live and learn.
Roger
PS - I wonder if there is a cheap way to guage running time of the electric
bilge pump (like an engine hour meter) so you know if it runs so much while
you are off the boat you have a leak to fix?

No surprises at all - the surveyor was really impressed with the boat, and
hinted that he would like to buy it. Since I did all of the plumbing and
electrical work, I expected something that was to 'code' but everything he
looked at he everything was professionally done, neat and conforms to all
current regulations. I anticipated that he was going to insist on an
automatic electric bilge pump...but after I went into my usual tirade about
the fact that my I work to keep water "out" of the boat...not how to get
water out that shouldn't be there in the first place, and in doing so I make
damn sure with regular inspections on all the hoses, clamps and thru-hull
fittings and valves, stuffing box, and whale gusher 10 manual pump that
there is no water in the boat, he was happy with that. It didn't hurt that
the bilges was completely dry. He agreed that if there was a problem, an
automatic pump would just mask the problem until the batteries went dead...I
pointed out that I did not need batteries to pump the boat out, only arms to
work the manual pump...I think he gave up on the idea of an electric pump.

Thanks Mike,
I have made teak brackets to hold the bases and will also have straps.
Without boxes, I can fit both in the middle locker (perhaps leaving the aft
one for beer). I plan to put some of that plastic flooring (Sport Court)
under the batteries so the plywood base stays dry.
Did you have any surprises with your survey?

Roger,
I just had my boat surveyed this morning. My batteries are Group 27 wet cell
batteries. The are not in battery boxes, but they are strapped down
securely. The surveyor told me that because of the location, under the floor
boards, they are protected as if they were in a battery box, therefore they
did not need to be in a battery box, but must be secured. Hope this helps.
BTW, 2 group 27 battery boxes will not fit under the cabin sole of the A30.

Hi Folks,
I have a West Marine (fully sealed) starting battery and an Optima Blue Top
(sealed) gel house battery. Both have small oval holes on the top for
ventilation. Does anyone know if regulatory agencies require they be in
battery boxes or do I just have to insure they are securely fastened? Does
ventilating them to the outside make a difference?
Thanks, Roger 148
