Hi,

Wires with AC power running through them shouldn't affect the 
compass. Although the current raises a magnetic field, it is 
switching back and forth fast enough that the net effect should 
be zero. But the fuse box or breaker box will, since they are 
usually made out of coated steel.

DC wires will produce a magnetic field, but if you twist the
positive and negative leads together, the effect will be
minimized.
