[Public-List] Bend in the hull

Stephen,
My boat #505 had the exact same thing. Most of the liner boats have this,
the ones that are raced hard in heavy winds are more pronounced. I decided
to fix mine. The cause is stress on the forward lower knee, but the shelf in
the forward cabin is a secondary structural member. You will note that this
shelf on the liner boats is pop riveted in place and does not provide
adequate support. I hate a pop rivet gun. I took the tension off the rig,
removed the forward lowers, removed the shelf and sanded the insides of the
hull where the shelf attached. Then I constructed a horizontal jack system
with 2x4s and pushed the hull back out to its original shape. With the hull
pushed out, I re-installed the shelf but glassed it back in place and
reinforced the knee at the same time. This provides the lateral support
needed to keep the hull from deflecting. I did this project 25 years ago and
the deflection has not returned despite some heavy weather sailing. A lot of
work and probably not necessary based on all of the other boats that have
never done this and do not seem to have any problems.

Subject: [Public-List] Bend in the hull
Hi,
I've noticed that my hull has a slight concavity in the topsides,
just below the forward lower shrouds. I've put two pictures up
at:
http://astrowww.phys.uvic.ca/~gwyn/pers/sailing/bend/index1.html
(and yes the cove stripe needs repainting) I'm assuming it's due
to the forward lowers pulling up on the fibre glass knee. I
think I can just barely see the same on the pictures recently
posted by George Mathis at:

Over 37 years, it's deflected by a 1/4 inch, so I'm only slightly
worried.
Should I worry more?
Has anybody else noticed the same thing?
Should I do anything about it?
