[Public-List] Launching 148 Bravo!

Thanks Michael,
There is still a lot to do but it is great to be in the water. We had our
first cockpit cocktail party last night but haven't had a breath of wind
since launch.
I suspect sometime during the "on the hard years" someone cut 5' off my
mast. I think this because last night I tried to flake on the used 150
roller ferruling genoa I bought at Bacons years ago and discovered the luff
is 5' longer than head stay foil! A great disappointment because its the
only roller ferruling headsail I have (except that really old one we now use
as an awning over the back porch).
Now, I can't spell but I can measure but I don't recall measuring that sail;
probably just took Bacons word for it. So now I have to make that "remember
me" call and see if they want to swap; bet the "swap" will involve me giving
them some money.
In the mean time, I was thinking of taking the luff chord off the porch
awning and installing reinforced grommets where the piston hooks for my
other headsails would go. Perhaps I will first try loops of line with
"roller beads" (sort of like the gaff gooseneck keepers you see on large,
traditional sailboats, but smaller) tied around the foil.
So many possibilities, so little time before winter; I think I will quit my
job.
Best,
Roger 148
PS - I did put several layers of rag under my Vice Grip shaft clamp but will
check for any damage.

Roger,
I am concerned that your use of vise grips might have marred the soft drive
shaft. If the marring is anywhere near where the packing will eventually
ride it will ruin the new packing or any packing (presto fast). A clamp as
Rick uses is unlikely to mar the shaft. All fasteners on the drive shaft
coupling gear should be safety wired.............do not even trust lock
washers or even Nyloc nuts. Use either castellated nuts with cotter pins or
drilled nuts with safety wire.................are you listening Joe Traub?
Hee,hee.
BTW, I am delighted for you that you are now in the on-the-water phase of
the next chapter of PERFECT Intentions future. It is a very sup erb refit
which PERFECT has received. Bravo!!! I do believe that Intentions and
Intension BOTH apply to you and the boat in your case. ;-)

Rick,
Good point, well stated; I never considered reverse. Vise Grips go back
into the tool box, replaced by a clamp or two.
Best,
Roger "Pi" (so much easier than lerning to spel intensions)

Roger,
That will make an entertaining chapter the your memoirs, no doubt!
That slipped shaft/rudder jam scenario is why I drilled dimples in the shaft
for the safety-wired setscrews and have a worm-drive hose clamp permanently
installed on the shaft just in front of the stuffing box. The shaft/coupling
joint seems to be the weakest point in the system transmitting reverse
thrust loading to the hull. And no situation, much less one bad enough to
require backing down hard, will be much improved by having the shaft part
ways with the rest of the boat.
I'm curious about what measures or precautions others have used.
