I am not sure what you are afraid it will look like so I may be off the mark here:If you are concerned that it will no longer look like varnished wood, here is a suggestion. Use the same technique to apply one layer of woven glass cloth that is used in the construction of a cedar strip canoe. It has been a lot of years since I did that so I will recommend that you search online for the detailed proceedure [ first place I would look is West System Epoxy ] . As I recall, the secret was to thoroughly "wet" the wood surface - lay the woven glass on - press and flatten it [ with a roller or squeegie (like a body man would use for filler)]. As I recall, after some time, we sqeegied all the excess resin off. Each day we brushed on another coat of epoxy and a while later squeegied it off. As I said - do your research. The REALLY important part was that first coat. If you take extra pains to make sure the cloth is COMPLETELY saturated, the whiteness of the cloth disappears. I can tell you that you have to look really, really closely to tell there is glass imbedded in the finish of my canoe. It just looks like varnished wood. Oh yeah, after the epoxy work is finished, start laying down layers of your favourite spar varnish just like it was bare wood. Each coat will both improve the look and the protection from UV [epoxy can not tolerate UV - it will go cloudy]
Hope this helps
Cheers, Rod
