My insurance agent told me that he's seen a lot more losses from alcohol
stoves than from gasoline engines. It seems that a lot of people, having
heard that you can put out an alcohol fire with water, spread the
burning alcohol on top of the water they throw on it (instead of using a
wet towel).

Googling, I found
http://www.moyermarine.com/forums/showpost.php?s=6041eb3d7aec664ea218f152361cdaed&p=135&postcount=6
which reports 1 to 2 explosions a year due to propulsion (not just
Atomic 4s, but including all boats and fuels).

I'm not sure I buy that report, as the 2010 USCG report
(http://www.uscgboating.org/assets/1/workflow_staging/Page/2010_Recreational_Boating_Statistics.pdf)
shows 159 fuel fire/explosion incidents (176 boats) including 2
fatalities (for all 12.4 million registered boats). Five of those boats
were auxiliary sailboats.
