For years, I've carried on the bow without any roller...just lashed
down.  Not ideal, but it gets the job done.

I'm now in the process of building a custom mahogany roller.  I built a
prototype out of pine scrap.  The aft end of the roller will be fitted
with a chain pawl, which I think will make hoisting much easier and a
windlass largely unnecessary.
