For those of you wanting to trailer your Albergs, check out the
state requirements for driver's licenses to haul at least 12,500 lbs on
the trailer (they always include the trailer weight in what you tow) or
the addition of the tow vehicle if they use gross total weight in their
laws, - which may get you having to have a license for tractor
trailers. In Ontario our limit is 5100 kgs (11,200 lbs) gross total
weight with a loaded trailer before we have to get a tractor trailer
driver's license. We can go to 22,000 lbs with all the weight on one
frame for another class of license that is different from a passenger
car permit.
The other thing is that requirements have changed for tow vehicles, and
you now have to have a plate on the door which allows for that much
towed weight on that vehicle. This will also mean you have the heavy
duty towing package for radiator, tranny and oil cooling as well. You
will then have to have a extra charge on the tow vehicle license to tow
that weight and added insurance too.
Unless the trailer is aluminum, it is highly unlikely that you will
manage to get the loaded trailer weight down to 12,000 lbs so that two
6000 lb axles will be legally insufficient for road travel. There needs
to be a manufacturer's plate on the trailer with the specs on it for
reference as well. that way you know the capacity of the axles when you
buy it. There will probably be regulations on having brakes on the
trailer too, and annual inspection certificates. You know the penalties
for negligence in your states for having a collision with insufficient
capacity for carriage and braking so just be warned. It is also tempting
to think that you can move some weight into the tow vehicle, but when
the limits are on total weight (including bodies), then you need to make
two trips.
This weeks cover on the Economist was "Over regulated America". You are
not alone when it comes to laws on the road, since the laws for
transport are integrated over at least the USA, Canada and Mexico. Now
it seems you are becoming over regulated on the water too.
