Peter and others,

This list has several members interested in having the rudder shoe and the pintle/gudgeon set recast for service replacements on their Alberg 30's. Two members have located an original rudder shoe which could be modified to use as a pattern for this work. We have yet to locate a pintle/two part gudgeon set to modify for a pattern. They need to be modified to compensate for casting shrinkage. Could just have a surface coating applied to increase size. This coating would then be removed to return the part to it's original size.

If we can't find an excellent condition original to use we will need to hand fabricate a pattern.Traditionally patterns where made from popular wood because of it's dimensional stability. Pieces of this wood could be Epoxied together and Marine Tex use to fillet and fair the surfaces. It is not difficult to make a pattern just time consuming. Thus the search for the original bronze set.

Please search your garages and junk boxes to see if you might have the parts we need. E-mail this list with your finds. Thank you from the 25 or so owners who wish to participate in the recasting project.

Again perhaps the CBAA in conjunction with the GLAA might like to support this project as a 50th Anniversary event.  I would guess that after some 50 years most of our boats are in need of these service parts.  This is such a great group of owners and it is invigorating to see the cooperation among us to keep our boats in safe, seaworthy condition.

Cheers,

Michael #133
