[Public-List] Alberg without an engine?

Hi Clayton,
I am in Comox BC, hull #30?? something, maybe 9, built 1968. I bought the
boat in 1999 with the Atomic 4. After sailing her for the most part without
an engine because it died so many times, (great way to learn
anchoring/docking etc) but finally in 2003 replace the engine with an Isuzu
3BL; 3cylinder about the same as the Yanmar but I liked the specs on it
better, and most fisherman swore by them. It fit very well into the engine
compartment, just a bit of modification. When I took out the Atomic I used
part of the existing fiberglass engine mounts adding a hardwood core and
fiber glassing over to give a better foundation for a diesel engine.
I have heard that if the water tank in the bow isn't somewhat full sail
performance is compromised, but haven't experimented with that or sailing
without the weight of the engine in the stern.
I have sailed the Pacific twice, not in my Alberg, a partners steel 36fter,
but agree that offshore/around the world you could do it without an engine
but here in the confined waters with strong currents and land sometimes to
close for comfort I think having an engine is pretty nice. Although I still
practice and enjoy sailing from/to the dock/anchor and trying to steer by
setting the sails. Enjoy the sense of independence.
Anyway there is my two sheets worth....
Good luck.
