Ahoy Glenn,
This is a great race. Whilst in SF I attended the pre-race meetings
for a couple of the races.
Although not a racer, I single-handed my Pearson 35 (Sun Po) from SF
to Hilo in 2001. As you note, it's a beam reach to warmer waters and
then a downwind run to Hawai'i while taking note of hurricanes forming
off Baja.
