Hi Kirk,
thanks for updating the list on Paul's circumstances. I exchanged emails with him a few times last week and found him to be quite a guy, not to worried about things and entirely enjoying his time at sea. Haha maybe not so much a day or two ago, but Iam glad he made it into Reunion and is Engaging repairs to his mast.
I talked to a rigging company this past spring when I had my masthead replaced. The lead rigger said the point of failure on Alberg masts because of rollovers was bending forces occurriaromatic above the spreaders. No reinforcement in the mast around the spreaders, so has a tendency to snap there- when the main goes in the water.
As a preventative upgrade, They put reinforcing plates outside the mast at the spreaders to strengthen the area, in lieu of putting a compression tube through the center of the mast. cost a bit, but less than building a new mast.
BTW, when you where researching circumnavigator's, did you find any Albergers who have done blue water cruises? I guess Iaminterested in documenting any A30 ocean passages, noteworthy cruises, etc, as well as Circumnavigation.
