    My boat, /Brigadoon II /(Ex-/Hooligan/) sail # 275, pre-liner, has
four small hatches in the cabin sole. Under three of them are the
batteries. The hatches are wooden with metal edges. I have always
assumed the metal was stainless steel, but recently I tried to clean
them up - they were pretty dirty after 46 years, and the silvery
colorcame off very easily. Had to be a thinchrome or nickleplating.
Underneath is copper.

I assume the copper is the usual undercoat of chrome plating. It
seems a lot thicker than the chrome (if that iswhat it was).

I don't suppose the base metal is actually copper, as it seems
stiffer than I think that thickness of copper would be (.045) Is the
metal actually plated steel? Bronze? A copper alloy? I see a certain
amount of green corrosion but no rust.
