Hey Jeff,

documentation is a Federal registration system instead of State registry. It is both a title and registration for the boat, and assures that certainownership conditions are met. cool thing is you can paint your boat name on the bow rather than have a string of state registration numbers showing. As a practical matter, all vessels over 5 tons must be registered through the Coast Guard as a matter of law.

You should receive a postcard each year reminding you to renew your documentation certificate. Just fill out the form and send it bak in, the documentation center will send you an annual stamp which you affix to the certificate, showing that the vessel is currently registered.

An important benefit is if you take the boat to a foreign country, the CG documentation certificate is accepted world wide as proof of registration during the clearance process.
