[Public-List] stern squat

I have seen on some boats where the entire shelf was removed. This is not a
good idea, since the shelf is a secondary support member. On the newer
boats, with liners, you can often see an indentation on the outside of the
hull, at the cove stripe, where the forward lower shroud is attached. This
was the case with my boat since the shelf was pop riveted by Whitby to the
fiberglass flange. I loosened the rig, pushed the hull back out, and glassed
the shelf into place so it would provide the lateral support to the hull.

I cut it back so that only 1/3 of the length from the fwd bulkhead aft
remains at full width. I made a new fiddle edge, and made the part where I
stopped cutting a sloping angle so as to minimize creation of a head-banging
corner. Basically I'm under the full width only from the knees down. Doing
the cut made a huge difference in the usability of the bunk. It was easy to
do with a jigsaw held up to the work upside down.
