I absolutely concur - there are too many differences from one boat to 
another to make a backstay ahead of time.

I would not order a back stay until mast is down. Mine measured 39.5 ft of
cable with sta-loc fittings on both ends. If you take mast down you should
be able to have a new backstay made in a day or less, this would be the
best method for ensuring you get the correct length. I made my own an used
my old one as a template.
