[Public-List] Rudder Post Bearing

I have #272 and posted about the  same issue more than a year ago. I
think the rudder post tube had the original packing material that has
been breaking down over 40+ years.

 I also have a soft cockpit sole, which I now believe is directly due to
this rudder tube issue. I think the rudder tube leaked into the cockpit
sole core many years before it started shooting up into the cockpit.

 I believe the solution is to remove all the core in way of the tube and
make it solid, as part of generally replacing the core in the cockpit
sole.

I have an older boat as well.  I took Randy's approach and wrapped flax
around the shaft.  It did not stop all water from entering the cockpit.
I
still get water in a following sea or with motoring.   The previous
owner
had installed rubber non-skid grating in the cockpit and it occurred to
me that the reason the grating was there was to keep his feet dry.  I
picked up an old teak cockpit grate from another boat and cut it to fit
the Alberg cockpit sole.  Looks good and keeps my feet dry.
