Unfortunately when it come to epoxy, gel-coat, or plastics in general there is always an opportunity for contamination. Even with a background in chemistry I cannot say with any confidence whether the contaminates are harmful or not but if its plastic, epoxy, gelcoat, paint or any other polymer based substance there is always opportunity for contamination because the polymerization is never a 100% process so there are always left over small molecules that can migrate out of the plastic. This even includes a polyethylene "water bag" that I use for camping and unfortunately is usually left in the sun which only accelerates the process or even PVC which is used in modern plumbing. Point being EPA deemed safe is not to mean there is not chemicals present, just that someone spent the money to have the EPA say the chemicals present are not harmful. Of course there are many things that the EPA have said were safe that are now illegal and if you
compare us to Europe we are in a pool of toxins because there are many things illegal in Europe that are sold in America, women's makeup in particular. Given that we drink water out of plastic bottles, I guess my take is just use best judgment, because if you are looking for absolute safety from chemical contamination you are not going to find it economically.

Not really, from what I learned recently, most epoxy and FG leach organics into drinking water. Only a few epoxy and FG products are EPA certified for use in potable water tanks. For example Sherwin Williams only had two certified epoxy coatings and the smallest 2 part mix was 2 gallons @$200.
Here is an interesting article about organic solids from epoxies leaching into drinking water.
Iam not sure charcoal filters are any good at removing these organics as the size of the molecule may be so small they could pass right through. Does anybody know? Would be interesting to hear if they actually are effective with this stuff.
