Stephen,

I hate drilling holes in the boat, too.

As can be seen in 
http://alberg30.org/maintenance/Head/RaritanNewer/VentForward.jpg if a 
vent is under water, the hose is headed uphill. I thought about making 
these go to the halfway point, but decided a smoother arc for better 
airflow was more important. I guess if I had to, I could always switch 
to port tack, so the vent hose is on the upper side of the hull.

BTW, Peggie Hall recommended 1" vents, but I've done OK with the 3/4".
