There is a bridge here in the Great Lakes at Sarnia called the 'Blue Water
Bridge' which spans the St Clair River. It's clearance over the river is
more than 200'.

When I was Executive Director of Toronto Brigantine Inc, we operated a pair
of steel hulled square riggers; big little ships with mast heads 57' aloft.
They look and feel tall, particularly when one is up there reefing topsails.

When the bridge is approached, it's easy for a novice to be convinced that
there might not be enough room to get under the bridge.

There was a decades old tradition that involved sending a first-timer up to
the mast head to be ready to push the bridge away if a variance water level
might prevent the vessel from squeaking under.... Sort of a rite of
passage...

I don't think they do it anymore - I never heard of a problem but such a
tradition was deemed too close to be mis-interpreted as 'hazing' so was
discontinued.
