Yes,we in the Alaska National Guard definitely experienced a bit of  arrogance from RA types (regular Army) what with their fondness for starched creases and spit shinned boots, and the complete absence thereof In our Armory in Fairbanks during weekend drills - to say nothing of haircuts... Some times my guys werent even allowed on base - the MP's didnt believe they were In the Army.  In return we felt a sense of pity and perhaps condescension for the poor creatures. After all they really didn't know any better.

One winter my fellow platoon leader Lt Gregory Austin and 35 guardsmen were assigned winter camp duty to defend a hill outside of Fairbanks against an airborne Ranger Battalion- the army's elite so we were told.  Gregory's guys were told to hold out for a short period of time and them give up so they wouldn't get hurt during the Ranger's winter assault and fire and  maneuver exercise.    By next morning Austin's 35 man platoon had captured all 400 rangers, and had marched them back onto Ft. wainwright as prisoners.  They were no match for Austin's Eskimo Scouts in 60 below zero conditions. Austin told em to stay in formation and march onto Post with their hands on their heads or he would leave them in the field, in the cold.  The starch in their uniforms and winter gear ruined the insulation value and  the rangers ran up to the scouts and surrendered in exchange for getting warm by our camp stoves and snow shelters, after parachuting onto the frozen tundra.
