Greg,  I rebuilt my FG rudder a few years ago - replaced the original bronze shaft with a new shaft.  A critical dimension is the 1/4" FG skin around the rudder shaft on the forward edge of the rudder.  Any thicker and the rudder will jamb up against the sides of concave recess in the trailing edge of the hull and not turn through its full arc.  Can't remember the overall thickness of the rudder, but it is the same thickness as the concave recess in the trailing edge of the hull.  

As others have mentioned, the bronze 1/4" pins inserted through the shaft and running aft within the rudder foam core hold the rudder rigidly to the shaft and keep the skin and foam from breaking loose and twisting around the shaft.
