[Public-List] Haul out issues

Wes,

Where do you haul your boat? If you would like I could visit the boat with
you and take a look at it to see if there are any concerns...I have owned my
boat for 37 years and do all of my own maintenance and have
encountered/fixed every problem there is.

Like George, I have used Micron CSC for many years with good results. This
year I changed to Micro 66 based on a Practical Sailor test of bottom
paints.

Wes,

Check everything under the waterline while she's out. Do the
throughhulls look in good shape? And the seacocks? Do the seacocks work
smoothly?

Replace the zinc.

Clean the prop and take a good look at it.

To check the rudder shoe, grab the rudder at the bottom and try to push
it back and forth. How much play is there? If you don't know how long
it's been since the rudder shoe has been off, I recommend removing it
for a visual inspection. When I first did this, the pin was completely
gone, but the rudder post had worn into the shoe enough to keep me from
detecting it. Check the bolts, too. And I advise using 5200 to put the
shoe back on. See http://alberg30.org/maintenance/Steering/RudderShoe/
for more details.

My opinion is that the prop shaft should have no discernible play. It
rotates a lot faster than the rudder. When I could feel play by pushing
sideways or up-and-down on the shaft, I replaced the cutless bearing.

As for paint, I use Micron CSC ablative.
