[Public-List] Aluminum mast treatment - Tremclad

Hi Richard,
He sanded the mast until all the oxidization was gone, cleaned with TSP,
used a chemical etching product (don't know which), and then used a Tremclad
primer followed with 11 aerosol cans of Tremclad semi gloss white.
I would imagine Rustolium would be a reasonable substitute
You will on any painted alu get some loss of adhesion over time, but
touching up with another can of Tremclad brings it all back nicely. His
total cost at the time was $135 CDN. And Awlgripped mast starts at $700 CDN
for a fully prepped mast fully stripped. Actual shop done Awlgrip jobs run
$2-3K.
Gord suggested rolling and tipping using a linear polymer polyurethane paint
like Brightside. The problem is, most people are not great roll & tippers,
and Brightside is a very hard paint to sand down.
If you do like most sailors up here, you unstep your mast annually, so a
touch up is no big deal - just don't get the over spray on someone else's
mast in the yard.
Other trick is never never never ever wrap your mast in plastic over the
winter, because, if painted you will get blistering and lots of it. If it is
an unpainted mast you will degrade it by trapping moisture and galvanic
action of SS against alu leading to pitting - that's straight from Danny
Klacko of Klacko Spars. If you are covering it, use canvas or other
breathable fabric.
Hope this is a help Richard
