[Public-List] Mainsail

When I bought SURPRISE I was delighted to find that she still had her
original mainsail built by Joe back when the boat was delivered in '69. The
sail was due for replacement, but still strong.

One of my sailmaking clients told me that he isn't surprised to hear about
pre-early 1970's polyester sails still in apparently strong condition...he
said that in the early '70's the cloth makers realized they were making an
indestructible product, so degraded the UV resistance thereby giving
polyester sail cloth a finite life span.

A more positive way to put that is that modern dacron sail cloth has a life
span that more closely matches the time a sail can retain it's shape and be
a well performing part of your rig.

I'm feeling happy today so I'll go with the 'glass half full'
explanation....
