[Public-List] Dodger

I'd easily believe that the stainless tubing alone could be another
$500, never mind the fittings, the labour to bend it into the correct
shape, and markup. Stainless isn't cheap, it's difficult to machine
(the HSS tooling that works fine on mild steel, bronze, brass, and
aluminum gets dulled by SS within fractions of a second, so cobalt or
carbide tools are necessary--and tool speeds and feed rates *crawl*
compared to other metals), and it's even worse to weld (in fact
stainless for welding is a special sub-grade--low carbon or L--of the
usual grades so that welding doesn't ruin its corrosion resistance,
and speaking of corrosion resistance, that passivization layer that
keeps rust from forming also gets in the way of making a decent weld).

I'd believe that all the figures I've seen so far are totally realistic.

Cheers,
Kris
