But one easy way would be to drop a line on a weight from the toe rail at the widest section, down to just off the ground. crawl under the trailer and measure the distance between the two strings?

> When you're only talking a 1.5 inch overhang on each side of the trailer and that's only at the maximum width of the boat which is probably 10 feet above your point of reference on the trailer, I'm fairly sure that no one could "see" much less measure that overhang in the field without some specialized equipment. I doubt that anyone could actually find the point of maximum width without some knowledge of the boat's geometry and a good reference to measure from. I think the only way they would know is if they had previous knowledge that an Alberg 30 was 8'9" and could identify the boat as such. I would think that it's a safe bet to haul without being stopped for width...

>> A couple of things I forgot to mention. As a consideration to other drivers (the police seem to like it as well) I have mounted a slow vehicle orange triangle in the rear center of the trailer, orange caution flags mounted on rear of each side at 45 degree angle and have a tail/turn light mounted on the end of the mast which protrudes several feet beyond the trailer but only three feet beyond the boat hull. Flashers on when below 40 mph. My trailer is exactly 8' 6" feet wide , but of course the boat is 8'9".......3" over the limit. You pays your money or you takes your chances for the over width situation. I also have never been stopped. State police and local Sheriff's usually give me the "cool" nod as they pass.
