Those aluminum placards were originially mounted on the wooden mast support beam. When the mast beam repair job was done, often the placard was moved where Jeff said, under the companionway sill.
However, it could be anywhere.
Does the boat have a metal mast beam - the major athwartship member above the head door?
Where will you sail the boat?

On Yankee Star it was on a placard mounted on the cockpit just below the
hatch opening. As you are looking at the hatch it was centered on the
bulkhead above the old compass box. Also a 68. It was on a metal tag.
The only thing still visible was the embossed hull #, We are 296
