    The issue when modifying fittings by filing them to make them fit is 
not really the tensile strength of the remaining cross section, which 
may be sufficient, but filing, unless done carefully and the fitting 
polished, may leave scars or sharp shoulders that are "stress risers," 
or points that may be prone to cracking. You might even magna-flux or 
otherwise examine the modified part before using it.
