[Public-List] Lazy Jacks

I did not install lazy jacks on my Alberg, "Emotional Rescue" #303 but I did install them on my Hunter 34 replacement, this Spring. The boat is a "club" boat belonging to Sail Chicago, a 503c1 organization. It has thus many skippers with different skill levels using the lazy jacks.
I purchased a Sail-Rite lazy jack system at Strictly Sail Chicago. It is composed of shock cord attached to white plastic thimbles. It is designed so as to be easily deployed only as you are dropping the sails. After the sail is wrapped with sail ties, the portion of the shock cord along the boom is released and secured to the mast at the gooseneck until the sails are dropped, once again. No longer will the battens get caught as we raise the sails. The existing line lazy jacks need to be removed and the shock cord assembly be attached with furnished hardware including eye straps, drill bits, screws and pop-rivets.
It has worked well, this season. The only complaint is that due to the lengthy shock cord, it is somewhat of a strain to attach the plastic hook to the eye strap at the end of the boom. This is particularly difficult in a rolling seaway, with the boom swinging back and forth on the main sheet. If one were to let the shock cord loose while attempting to hook it on the boom end, it could severely damage your face and eyes.
I am going to move these two eye straps about 6-9 inches forward to ease the tension in the shock cord.
Ed Schroeder (formerly skipper of Emotional Rescue)

I'm still into the grab it, pull it back, flake it down mode...even with my
knee replacement!
