[Public-List] V-berth platform

My wife would kill me for telling this story, but here goes.

One time a while ago we were on a weekend sail, and I got an idea.

"What ho" I said, "did you know I've heard those wooden battens along the
edges of the bunks in the main cabin are to receive the plywood fillers
we've been carrying around under the mattresses of the settees. They're to
make what they used to call a 'honeymoon berth' that turns the whole main
cabin into one big playpen'".

What one does is put the plywood fillers in, slide the main mattresses
together and the back rests come down to fill in flat, outboard of them.
Presto. A big bed.

So, I pulled out the boards and started fitting them in. First try, they
didn't quite fit. With much levering and tugging I got them out and turned
them. Still not quite, but I found it much tougher to pry them out. I
tried switching them fore and aft. By this time I was getting tired and my
soft curses were getting louder. I got them in but had to hammer one side
down with my heel.

OK, almost there. I pulled the mattresses back in, then found that the back
rests didn't fit; they were too wide. I guess when the boat was
re-upholstered they'd forgotten about their dual purpose. I started
banging and jerking at the boards to get them up again.

Then I noticed that Caroline curled up at the forward end of the cabin red
faced trying not to laugh. She said I looked so single minded, but more and
more desperate trying to build the big berth that she couldn't stand it any
more.

I had to laugh too. Then I said "Geez, imagine what all this crashing and
hammering sounded like to the other boats in the anchorage!?" Then we were
both laughing so hard we were choking.
