As a workable temporary fix when my sheave was damaged by a close lightning strike, I installed a block on the aft side of the mast, hanging from a stainless steel 6" eyebolt which was threaded through the mast, over the top of the sheave. Jay Davenport
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animating contest of freedom, — go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen!”

Jim,
Check the Web Site Archives. This has been discussed many times before.

Subject: [Public-List] PULLEY AT TOP OF MAST
My cable that lifts the main sail has jumped off the pulley inside the mast two times now, once in VERY BAD weather and once on a sunny afternoon.
The sail is currently stuck 3/4 way up and I would like to know if there is a repair for this, short of removing the mast and rebuilding the pulley area to stop this problem??
Has any one replaced the pulley with a block on the aft side of the mast, and if so what size block? My thoughts was to install a double block (over and under) where the boom block is installed. I am not an engineer, so have question. Is the bolt that holds the block for the boom would be strong enough to also hold the weight of pulling the main sail up??
Thank you for any advice or experience with this problem, I have enjoyed My Alberg for the last eight years and have sailed her for many thousand miles according to my chart plotter. She has really brought me many many days of pleasure mixed with a few times of shear terror.
