Around here the most possibility of getting enough water in the cockpit 
to bother the engine panel  is in the winter if there is a heavy snow 
(and the boat is not covered) and it thaws and re-freezes, plugging up 
the drains and more snow and rain collects.


I keep screens over the drains to keep leaves out.
