[Public-List] Public-List Digest, Vol 3192, Issue 2

If you plan on cover plates, seriously consider using butyl tape as your bedding/caulking compound. It lasts forever (6 years and counting on Horizon), and we have completely done away with the annual/biannual chainplate recaulking job. Bulkheads are bone dry.

For all things related to deck hardware (and many other interesting solutions), this is an excellent site:

http://www.pbase.com/mainecruising/rebedding_hardware

Several articles address use of butyl tape and you can even order it there.

Gordon,

Thank you, but credit should go to Wes Gardner. Wes has mentioned
the Schaefer chainplate covers and in doing so seems to have convinced
me to add them. Noodling the idea that 7 pieces of G-10 3" by 2"
(covers are 2-1/2" x 1-9/32" per Schaefer webpage ) expoxied to the deck,
rounded corners, filleted G-10 deck joint, with Schaefers on screwed down
on top might be just the thing that the well-dressed Alberg 30 will be
wearing
this season.

Hi Jonathan:
I just went out to the barn and checked and the back stay chainplate on
the AL22 is reversed with the moment as built by Allan Nye. At the same time
I checked the knee under the deck and suggest that everyone check the
tabbing on that because the top end of the knee on 528 seems non-existent.
The knee is much wider than the chainplate so the chainplate is not aligned
with the longitudinal lines of the knee. That will spread the load over more
than just one line on the knee.

Backing up a moment, Don mentioned:

"The backstay chainplate offers a different problem. There is a moment of
force there because of the design. The top bolt is aft of all the the
others because *the chainplate is angled aft at the top*. Thus if the top
bolt fails from a bad knee, then the leverage is increased on the lower
bolts and shear is more likely. As the chainplate revolves around the
bottom bolt as the others shear, and it holds because there is no longer a
moment to shear it, once straight with the stay, there is a major overload
in a straight pull to cause the shear then, and there is no deck that can
hold that so the backstay flies free."

Needless to say, this scared the "stuffing" out of me particularly as it
does not match what I remember seeing in #262.....hurriedly went to the
boat last night to check. To my relief, the backstay chainplate is
installed through the deck and bolted to the knee at an angle in line with
the backstay.

Did Whitby change the installation of the backstay chainplate at some point
?

Jonathan

P.S. backstay chainplate is 1-1/4" x 3/16" x 6" (below deck) with 5/16"
bolts, 1/2" pin in the chainplate and 1/4" 1x19 stainless steel wire
backstay.
