[Public-List] Bulkheads

Hi All,

I think the Gougeon brothers of West System fame have been recommending
reinforcing attachment points and penetrations using thickened epoxy. This
is what I did for my bulkheads. A PO had mashed 1/4" washers under larger
fender washers that resulted in compressing and deforming the holes through
the plywood bulkhead. When I redrilled for 5/16" I enlarged the holes,
filled and redrilled for the actual bolt size, I also laid in a good dollop
of thickened epoxy under the very large fender washer that I used in
conjunction with the larger bolts. I hand tightened the bolts letting the
epoxy compress further into the bolt hole, I then went back after the epoxy
set and did a final tighten. Once again, my bulkheads were in really
pretty good shape. The knees for the lowers, when drilled, the drill
shavings came out bright and dry (YAY!) so I didn't do much with them other
than replace with 5/16" bolts. The tabbing all looks like the day it was
laid up - someone. over the years, has done me a favor by keeping the
chainplates well caulked - I do have the Schaefr chainplate covers...
