[Public-List] Re powering my A30

It is very hard for me to understand why anyone would ever think of taking
out an Atomic 4 if it is basically in tact, no matter how warn it may be,
and replacing it with a 6 hp outboard with a 6" prop. The A30 is a
BEAUTIFUL boat and will remain active for many, many years with normal
maintenance. But to cut it up and put an outboard in the lazzarette
SIGNIFICANTLY changes the design and the value of the boat. It is a shame
to hear of one being modified like that. I say repair the Atomic 4 or
replace it with a diesel, with the first the better option. You can sail
that boat for many years and sell it with little or no loss, but with the
outboard your buyers will be very limited. Certainly no one who knows the
A30 would be interested.
The video of the mod showed very good workmanship, but to damage an A30 in
as good shape as that one appears to be is a major disaster. Think of the
man hours and materials (including the outboard) it took to do that job,
multiply by a decent hourly rate and that amount of money would buy 2
diesel engines. It doesn't even appear to have a long shaft and to think
that that engine is going to safely push a 10, 000 + pound A30 in a 20 + kt
breeze is wish full thinking.
Get a good mechanic to overhaul your Atomic 4 while you get on with the
many other repairs that are needed.
