[Public-List] Re powering my A30

About 10 years ago we purchased an Alberg 30 with an atomic 4. The motor literally had a hole in the head and other block problems. After research we installed a 9.9 hp Johnson on a bracket on the stern. I like the idea of being able to tilt the motor out of the water when not in use. Installed remote controls in the cockpit. Felt really good about what we accomplished. What was an added bonus was the additional storage space.Having said all of this we were pleased with the forward but there was almost no reverse. As someone mentioned earlier what are the conditions? If you have any wind from the stern you will not be able to depend on the outboard motor to impede you forward speed. We even tried changing the pitch on the prop with no help. We used this configuration for about a year or so then we installed a Beta 20.That was not easy task you have to change from fuel tank to exhaust. By the way love the Bata.

Greg,
I agree with George. One can almost always rebuild for less than replace. If you can do any of the work, there is no question about it.
James Baldwin in Brunswick, GA has done many out board conversions of Alberg 30's. I have seen his work, it is first rate.
Several Alberg 30's have converted to electric propulsion as well.
Michael #133................ always to be a Gray Marine Sea Scout gas engine on board.

Greg,
I'm curious about how you use your boat. It seems to me that the options
you're considering have very different advantages and disadvantages.
Diesels seem good for motoring long distances and outboards seem good
for merely getting in and out of harbor in relatively settled weather.
When you say "tired Atomic four," what's tired about it? Have you
considered a replacement Atomic 4? (That's what I've just done.) They're
not sexy engines. They won't go as far on fuel as a diesel, but I'm not
motoring long distances. They don't seem as easily replaceable as an
outboard, but they don't require cutting the hull (like hull #1 did) or
crafting a bracket (like Yves Gelinas did) which runs up the cost and
complication considerably. They are relatively reliable, long-lived, and
simply repaired engines. I wonder why it's not on your list of
considerations.
