Scott

We have owned our Alberg 30 for 39 years, and the iron ballast has never
been a problem.

Subject: [Public-List] Iron ballast vs. Lead

I am in the market for a traditional sailor, and the Alberg 30 is such an
amazing boat and with an incredible pedigree (as this crowd can attest to).
With that said, I have been focusing on Alberg 35's as a better purchase of
a 50 year old boat due to the 35's possessing lead ballast vs. The Alberg
30's iron ballast ( I read that one owner actually had one made demanding
lead be used instead). I would be far more eager to own an A30 (and take on
the associated upgrading and maintenance that these boats require) if I
wasn't already so concerned about 50 years of osmosis and it's effect on
the keel and corrosion of encased cast iron.

Can anyone address this concern, and if this has issue has materialized in
existing A30 fleet thus far? If so, how common is it and what is the repair
procedure and cost? Long term?
