You may be confusing the cutlass bearing (where the shaft exits the hull) to
the stuffing box. I do not know of any type of dripless replacement for the
cutlass bearing, but there are dripless replacements for the stuffing box.
One is called a PSS Shaft Seal. I have never used one of these and have
heard some unfavorable things about them...one of which is they can freeze
over the winter and split the bellows causing the boat to sink. The other is
called dripless moldable packing. With this product you use the same
stuffing box that you already have but replace the packing with this
moldable packing. it changes the stuffing box from a water-lubricated
bearing to a Teflon sealed bearing, so no more dripping from the stuffing
box. I put this on my boat 20 years ago and have not had to adjust it since.
My theory is that the water should stay on the outside of the boat,
otherwise I would have bought a swimming pool instead of a boat. Here's a
link to this stuff:

Has anyone replaced the original cutlass bearing with a dripless one?if so
what kind did you use and are you happy with it?
