Hello friends,

I didn't get into this discussion because my experience is not recent...but
the cable connector corrosion issue is something we experienced.

Way back in '83 I brought a Dufour 31 (fairly horrible boat) from Martinique
to Toronto, via St Maartin, Bermuda, New York, and the canals up into Lake
Ontario.

We had an Autohelm 2000 tiller pilot. We had a fair bit of trouble getting
it going at the start of the trip, and Autohelm's office in Martinique
eventually replaced the whole unit.

The device performed well when motoring or sailing in moderate conditions,
but was unable to cope in heavier weather.

During the voyage we had problems with seawater getting into the plug in
connector. We found some relief by washing the socket and prongs with fresh
water, connecting them, then wrapping with rigging tape to try to keep water
out.

I remember that part of my decompression from that trip involved
involuntarily listening for the grinding sound of the actuator while laying
in bed for quite some time after I was home again. Hearing it's
'brrrrrrrr-bup-bup-bup-bup-brrrrrr' meant it was working.
