[Public-List] Hull,deck and toenail juncture

My 1965 Alberg 30, #69 has a raised teak toerail with cutouts that serves as scuppers. To cover the seam where it meets the deck/hull connection a PO ( I assume) fastened a half-oval ( not solid) stainless steel trim strip. To cover the base of the toe rail, however, the trim strip is slightly higher than the deck, perhaps 1/4”. That tends to dam up a bit of water, not much, but it doesn’t seem ideal. I removed the trim to inspect, and sure enough, behind the metal was quite a lot of fine composted dust. I removed all the trim and collected maybe a half cup of stuff. The trim strip had been screwed into the “edge-grain” of the masonite. It doesn’t look like it had been predrilled to allow for the shank of the screw as there was a split at nearly every screw-hole, and in a couple instances a slight hump is visible because of that. Amazingly there was no damage to the masonite core. It is dry and sound and when tapped sounds crisp throughout.
My question is this - Does anyone know how this detail is properly resolved? Anyone have pictures of Albergs that have this same or similar configuration?
