Hey Tim,
We are all in the same boat. The ice box on mine is non-functional as
well. It is excellent at keeping beer warm. I haven't had the time yet to
rebuild it as Mike Lehman and Jonathan Adams did. I am leaning in that
direction.
However, for the past two seasons this is what I did. I looked at the
"Yetti" coolers. The price just rubbed me wrong for a cooler. So I read
the reviews and found very little difference in efficiency amongst the
brands that make " 5 day" coolers. I bought the Coleman 5 day because it
compared favorably, it had wheels and it was $ 50.
After two seasons of use, here is my assessment
The pros:
-It does hold food/beer cold for 4 days with a block of ice in there, even
in a Baltimore summer
-I have to pack the cooler anyway when taking food/beer to the boat, so
there is no transfer hassle once I am at the boat
-the price is definitely right
-the wheels on the cooler really are wonderful and I can roll the damn
thing to the boat rather than carrying a heavy cooler
The cons:
-It seems like it is in the way, i.e. it takes up too much space on a small
boat. Usually, I place it between the head and the closet. It is mostly
out of the way. This past weekend, I kept the cooler in the cockpit. On
the flip side of this argument, I would probably carry an igloo cooler for
sodas/beer anyway, so I am bound to lose some amount of floor space to some
form of a cooler
-the coleman model only has imbedded handles making it awkward to lift at
times
That is my two cents. I am happy to talk with you about it further but
that is the temporary and cost effective solution I have arrived at. I
will probably rebuild the ice box at some point in an attempt to make it
"Yetti-like"
Good luck,
Woody
