I had a similar experience several weeks ago in the Turkey Shoot regatta in Irvington VA. It is the one and only race that I sail each year and is primarily for classic boats which is defined as those over 25 years in design. Because the age limit has never been adjusted there are now a number of more modern boats that have crept into the fleet. The Sunday race is a pursuit with start times based on PHRF ratings. This year the finish leg was a wonderful close reach in about 15 kts which our boats really seem to enjoy. We crossed the last turning mark slightly ahead of a 36' racer/cruiser from the 1990's complete with Kevlar sails and matching crew polo shirts with logo. I fully expected that they would immediately overtake us but instead they remained about four boat lengths behind us for the entire leg. I might add that my boat had provisions aboard for five days, a full water tank in the bow and a three bladed prop dragging through the water. It was a wonderful feeling.
