Thanks Chris –

A generous Alberger has sent me a complete panel with cable which was surplus to his own boat… I’ll have that tomorrow and will be trying out options.

I’m again grateful to this group.

Surely worth looking into. Is the cable spinning now? Disconnect the gauge end, spin now? Disco both ends, spin now? If you need a cable google custom tach cable, lots of options.

That’s very interesting… particularly since one of my long time regular crew owns the local car shop which specializes in old VW’s…

I’ll forward this to him and ask what he thinks.

Thanks

Gord,

If the cable is like most mechanical tach or speedometer cables it is a simple spring cable with squared off ends. Buy a section of spring cable square off the ends in a press then solder to keep in place and presto you have a new useable cable.

This is easy ...............................Gord, you like easy don't you. Check auto parts store or farm tractor place and get a cable longer than you need and make it the length you want. Be sure you clean out the old housing and lube Lightly" for the new cable to run in. A cable for the old style VW beetle might be long enough. They are available.

Thank you Matt –

Don at Moyer Marine answered at the same time you did. He says that the mechanical cables have not been available for over 30 years.

I’m going to order an electric tach from him, and also oil pressure and ammeter. I’ll make a new panel which fits into the dimensions of the factory supplied Universal Marine A4 face.

Finally I’ll have all my instruments in one place… previous owners have put engine temp, fuel, elsewhere in the boat as the ones in the panel died. Well now the tach, the main even, is gone, I’ll make myself a new one.

Cheers –

Gord
