Hello Stephen – 

 

Hose is certainly more expensive, but there’s no reason it can’t last indefinitely if it’s protected from chafe (easy to do)  Surprises head hoses are coming on 17 years old, and are still as good as new with regard to water and vapour tight integrity.

Hose costs 10 bucks afoot. PVC pipe costs 10 cents a foot (both those numbers are exaggerated, but you take my point). Hose lasts 5-7 years. Pipe lasts (in houses) forever. 

 

However installation can be an issue, as you point out.
