[Public-List] Holding Tanks

Andrew,
I agree with Mike. I installed a 14 gallon holding tank under the port v-berth on my boat (hull #526). As Mike mentioned, the key to avoiding odors is maintaining an aerobic environment in the tank by having 2 generous-sized vents. The tank manufacturer told me to increase the vent line diameter from the norm of 5/8" to 1", which I did. Ideally the vents should exit the boat on opposite sides of the hull. Mine are below the toe rail, port and starboard, about 3 feet aft of the bow. The system has worked well for several years.

Andrew,
The key is to have the tank well vented with 2 air vents. One to let fresh
air in and the other to let air out. This creates an aerobic environment
that does not smell. In an anaerobic environment it is the dead bacteria
that creates the smell. This is why bladder tanks are not suitable.
I have never seen an A30 that converted the water tank to a waste holding
tank. If you do this, you will need to replace the aluminum top with
fiberglass since the aluminum will corrode quickly when it is in contact
with human waste. Also all of the plumbing will need to be converted to
plastic.
The last A30s built hand the storage under the cabin sole converted to a
holding tank. The aluminum top and pick up tube did not last very long.
Hope this helps
